Australia had been drawn to play in a tough group in the finals, meeting East Germany in Hamburg, West Germany in Hamburg and Chile in Berlin. Against East Germany, the Australians held out well for an hour before the first goal was scored. East Germany won 2-0. Four days later, Cup favourite West Germany opened its scoring in the 12th minute, added a second in the 35th minute and produced a third eight minutes into the second half. Torrential rain marred the match against Chile and Australia had to struggle even harder after Ray Richards was dismissed for a second bookable offence. But despite playing with 10 men, the Socceroos held on for a 0-0 draw, their first point in the World Cup finals.

Brazil 1958 / 1962 World Cup. Pictured is Garrincha who, after Pele was injured, almost won the World Cup for Brazil on his own in Chile. Garrincha was as brilliant on the pitch as he was wild off of it. He is known as the greatest dribbler in soccer history even though he was born with crippled legs. Besieged by marital & tax problems, Garrincha (the "songbird") died in January 1983 of alcohol abuse.

Italy 1962 World Cup Chile. The Battle of Santiago is the name given to a particularly unsavoury and infamous football match during the 1962 World Cup Finals. It was a game played between hosts Chile and Italy on June 2, 1962 in Santiago The first foul occurred within 12 seconds of the kick-off. Italy's Giorgio Ferrini was sent off in the twelfth minute after a foul on Honorino Landa, but refused to leave the pitch and had to be dragged off by policemen. Landa retaliated with another foul few minutes later, but he was not sent off. English referee Ken Aston overlooked a punch by Chilean Leonel Sanchez to Italian Mario David. When David kicked Sanchez few minutes later, he was sent off. A later scuffle in the match In the violence that continued, Sanchez then broke Humberto Maschio's nose with a left hook by accident. The two teams engaged in scuffles and spitting, and police had to intervene three more times. Chile won the match 2-0 (74' Ramírez; 88' Toro), eleven men against nine.
